soft joints

Bamboo is a popular building material because of its strength, flexibility, and abundance. However, current bamboo joining techniques are primarily geared towards temporary structures and, thus, limit the material’s application. This research proposed that fabric-formed concrete “pillows” can be used as stress-distributing, rigidifying connectors in bamboo construction. The amorphous nature of these soft joints provided an ideal counterpart to the unpredictable shapes and sizes of the bamboo: the joint conforms to its surrounds and produces more permanent structural connections.
