Zach Cohen is a designer, researcher, and educator. His work examines the ways in which architects can use digital fabrication to reimagine both the immaterial and physical labor of architectural design. Zach is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union. Previously, he was the Christos Yessios Visiting Assistant Professor at the Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University and a Research Lead at the Self-Assembly Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Zach is also co-founder and partner of the Brooklyn-based architectural design practice,&#38;nbsp;commoncraft. Zach is a licensed architect in the State of New York.

		<description>piling

Piling is a speculative method of 3D printing reinforced concrete columns. In piling, concrete is precisely piled into and smushed out of a rebar cage, layer by layer. The process is controlled by three temporal parameters that are hard-coded into a custom-made “pile machine”: the diameter and height of each deposit is determined by the duration for which the pump is turned on at a layer, the vertical stacking is enabled by delays that are inserted between layers, and the incremental vertical movement is determined by the duration for which the electronic winch is turned on after these delays.

		<description>
drippingIn the dripping workflow, the designer programs the robot to deposit concrete at specific points in space, or “drops,” and then instructs the robot when to revisit each drop and in what order. Each drop has two temporal parameters (or, delays) that are encoded within it: extrusion time, which is the duration for which the extruder is active at the drop, and wait time, which is the duration for which the extruder waits before moving to the next drop. These temporal parameters determine the local structure and aesthetics of the print. For example, a drop that has not been visited for a long duration will conform less to a new deposit than its more recently visited neighbors. The dripped thing emerges from the delayed depostion process and assumes a materiality that is representative of the time that went into its making.

		<description>imprinting

In improvisational 3D printing (or, imprinting), the designer embodies and performs the long-durational repetition of the 3D printer. Through this embodied making, the designer can overcome the determinacy of standard 3D printing workflows, for example: there is no digital modeling, there is no “slicing” software, and there is no singular G-Code file. Instead, the designer improvises the form of the 3D printed thing by drawing and tracing each contour of their design on a sheet of tracing paper. The tracing paper is on top of a graphics tablet that communicates to the 3D printer through the custom-made “Tracer” software. Each time that the designer lifts their hand from the paper, the 3D printer precisely reproduces their imperfect trace. Once the machine prints a trace, it moves to the next vertical layer and awaits the next input.

		<description>
exhaling

Robotic exhalation is a novel digital fabrication methodology that uses digitally controlled
pulses of compressed air to form concrete panels that can vary in porosity and
surface morphology.

In the robotic exhalation workflow, a pen
plotter-turned-exhalation machine continually blows compressed air onto
concrete immediately after it has been poured into an open face mold. The
constant air flow repeatedly forms the wet concrete until the mixture sets. The designer specifies where the machine exhales, for what
duration, and with what force, as well as the rheology of the concrete.&#38;nbsp;
